It already seems that Marvel is making a decisive effort in introducing more female heroes. In addition to the introduction of Gamora (Zoe Saldana) in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel already has Agent Carter airing on ABC and Netflix series AKA Jessica Jones in the pipeline. However, summer 2018 will mark the highly anticipated release of Captain Marvel, the most high-profile female-led project Marvel Studios has tackled to date.According to OK! Magazine (via Comic Book Movie), Marvel is courting Angelina Jolie to direct the film. The actress-turned-filmmaker most recently directed
the buzzed-about (and Oscar-nominated) Unbroken, and that film reportedly impressed Marvel enough for the studio to offer Jolie a $20 million paycheck to bring Captain Marvel to the big screen. The magazine’s sources claim that Marvel considers it a priority to land a female director for the film.
If true, this rumor would make a certain amount of sense. After all, Jolie is one of the most well-known and respected women working in Hollywood, and her involvement would bring even more attention to Captain Marvel. Plus, the fact that she has written two of her directorial efforts fits nicely in line with Marvel’s recent inclination to bring writer/directors like James Gunn into the fold, though at this point there’s no reason to think Jolie would write as well if she decides to join the project.
That being said, Jolie hasn’t directed anything close to the scale of a Marvel project, with her filmography consisting primarily of more modestly budgeted dramas thus far. Still, she has starred in several action films, including comic book adaptation Wanted, and may have developed a strong sense of how to bring action to life onscreen based on those experiences.
With DC having already brought Michelle MacLaren on board to direct its Wonder Woman film, Marvel will likely follow suit in selecting a female director for Captain Marvel, and it’s not a huge stretch to picture Jolie near the top of that list. It may be a while before we start learning tons more about Captain Marvel - including who will star as the title hero (Emily Blunt perhaps?) – but let the speculation begin as to who should take the director’s seat.
