Mbappe, 18, enjoyed a terrific breakthrough season after netting 26 goals and providing a further 14 assists to help Monaco clinch the Ligue 1 title.
But Giroud thinks the media should ease up on their expectations, and give him some much-needed space to develop.
He told reporters: “I will not go against what you say about him. He is a good kid… a young man, forgive me, who is full of maturity.
“But I think we should leave him a little alone.”

He told Brazilian radio station ATL Grenal: “Alisson? He's fine, unfortunately he’s not played much, only in the Coppa Italia and in the Europa League, but I think he’ll be a starter next season because Szczesny thinks he’s going to Juve.”

The Gunners want to sign Nigeria youngster Onyekuru from Belgian side Eupen.

"The first and most important thing for a player is to get playing time," he told ESPN.
"I'm still young and I still have a long career to pursue but now I need to play.
"My agents are in talks with top clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga, French league and others. If they accept our terms, then I'll make a decision.
"It's not just about going to a big club and sitting on the bench. It's not good for me, or being loaned to a club where I won't play or where I will struggle to play.
"The money can come later but for now, I just want to play to improve, not just to play for a big club."

6.30: Arsene Wenger has confirmed Reiss Nelson will be promoted to the Arsenal first team next season.
Arsenal boss Wenger has a track record in bringing youth players up through the academy and into the full Gunners side.
And he told Arsenal.com that teenager Nelson has earned his place.
“We have some young players who will join the squad next season,” Wenger said. “Like Reiss Nelson, like Ainsley Maitland-Niles already. So they are two players.
“So we have quality players who might have a chance next season and hopefully we will be able to do that again because that’s part of the DNA of the club as well.
“The first quality we have that will be needed is to keep the [first-team] players together. The team has learned a lot, but to transfer that into the new season the first ingredient and the first request is that they stay together, that they fight together.
“So that’s basically my answer: let’s keep them all together.”
